After nearly five years of development limbo, Netflix has finally pulled the trigger on its long-teased Assassin’s Creed live-action series. The streamer officially ordered the adaptation to series, with creators Roberto Patino (DMZ, Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming) set to serve as showrunners and executive producers.

For longtime fans, this feels overdue. The Assassin’s Creed franchise, with its blend of historical drama, sci-fi intrigue, and acrobatic action, has always felt like a perfect fit for serialized storytelling. While the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender attempted to bring the games to the big screen, it largely missed the mark with both critics and audiences. A series format gives the narrative more room to breathe and the characters time to actually matter.

Patino and Wiener seem fully aware of the franchise’s storytelling potential. In a joint statement, they called the show a story about “people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance.” That’s a heavy mission statement — but if they can back it up, fans could be in for something special.

Netflix is describing the series as a “high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will.” Expect assassinations, hidden blades, and historical flashbacks galore. According to the official logline, the story will follow characters across major historical events as they clash over the future of humanity.

There’s still no release window, and casting details are under wraps. But the fact that this series has officially moved past development is a win in itself. If Netflix plays it right, Assassin’s Creed could finally get the adaptation it deserves.
