Ryan Gosling is officially going to space. Amazon MGM Studios just dropped the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, the upcoming adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel (the same author behind The Martian). This time, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with zero memory and learns he’s humanity’s last hope.
The trailer opens on a disoriented and heavily bearded Grace, floating aboard a ship over 11 light years from Earth. As his memories return in pieces, we find out the sun is dying, along with countless other stars, because of a mysterious substance. But one star has resisted it. Grace is sent to investigate, reluctantly, and maybe save Earth in the process.

But he’s not the only one looking for answers. Another species has arrived at the same star system with the same goal, setting the stage for a surprising and emotional first contact story.
Project Hail Mary is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, best known for Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie, and adapted by Drew Goddard (The Martian). Alongside Gosling, the film stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. It is set to release in theaters on March 20, 2026.
