On a recent episode of the Distance Nerding podcast, hosts Phil and Jen talked about Pixar officially moving ahead with The Incredibles 3, this time without longtime director Brad Bird. Pixar veteran Peter Sohn is stepping in as director, known for his work on Elemental and The Good Dinosaur.

There are no plot details or release date yet, but Sohn’s involvement opens the door to a different take. He has decades of experience at Pixar and has contributed to The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and Up. His most recent film, Elemental, was praised for its emotional depth and creative visual storytelling. If he brings that same style to The Incredibles 3, fans could see a story that leans more on character and family than superhero spectacle.

One of the highlights from the last film was Jack-Jack’s chaotic powers, especially in his raccoon fight. The Distance Nerding crew joked about how fun it would be to see Jack-Jack aged up, maybe as a kindergartner, with Dash heading off to college and Violet returning from hers. While Pixar has not confirmed a time jump, Toy Story 5’s recent preview at the Annecy festival showed Bonnie had aged, so Pixar is clearly open to moving its characters forward.

Brad Bird has been central to The Incredibles from the start. His vision shaped its retro style, pacing, and tone. Passing the baton to Sohn is a big shift, but it follows a trend at Pixar where trusted insiders take the lead on major projects. With Elemental eventually grossing nearly 500 million dollars after a slow start, Sohn has proven he can handle pressure and surprise audiences.

Pixar is still adjusting to the post-pandemic theatrical world. The Incredibles 3 might be the perfect example of how legacy franchises can evolve under fresh leadership while still delivering what fans love.
