Distance Nerding hosted a thoughtful and lively conversation with Bonnie Wright during Gem State Comic-Con 2025, giving fans a look into her life beyond Harry Potter. Best known for playing Ginny Weasley, Wright joined the panel to share behind-the-scenes stories, her passion for environmental activism, and her evolving career in filmmaking.

The panel opened on a playful note with Wright reminiscing about her early geek interests. Growing up, she shared that she loved anything her older brother did, which included Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon. In fact, it was her brother’s enthusiasm for the Harry Potter books that led her to audition for the role of Ginny. “Whatever he geeked out on, I did too,” she said with a smile.

Wright described the unique experience of stepping onto a movie set at just nine years old. She credited Julie Walters, who played Molly Weasley, for helping her navigate those early days on set. “I knew absolutely nothing when I started,” she admitted, explaining that the years filming Harry Potter served as her acting and filmmaking education. That experience ultimately led her to study film in university, a path that has since shaped her creative passions.

One major highlight of the interview was Wright’s discussion of her current project, Go Gently. Both a book and an upcoming TV series, Go Gently encourages small, practical steps toward sustainability. “I wanted to create something that helps people feel connected to these big issues in a manageable way,” Wright explained. The show follows her and her co-host on a road trip from Los Angeles to Portland, highlighting local environmental initiatives.

The conversation also explored the evolution of the Harry Potter fanbase. Wright marveled at how new generations continue to discover the series. “You meet seven-year-olds today who are experiencing it like it’s brand new,” she said, noting how special it is that the story continues to resonate.

When asked about favorite memories from filming, Wright highlighted scenes at The Burrow, calling the Weasley home her favorite set. She also opened up about the intensity of filming scenes in Chamber of Secrets, especially the darker moments involving Ginny’s possession by Tom Riddle’s diary.

As the panel wrapped up, Wright answered rapid-fire questions with humor and heart. She shared her dream of contributing to a potential Court of Thorns and Roses production, revealed she’s currently nerding out on that very book series, and reflected on her love of working behind the camera in small, collaborative productions. When asked about a dream career in the wizarding world, she half-joked that she’d love to design the magically larger tents seen at the Quidditch World Cup.

Throughout the interview, Wright’s grounded perspective stood out. Whether discussing the joys of acting, the challenges of filmmaking, or her commitment to sustainability, she offered fans a thoughtful and relatable look at her life after Harry Potter.

Gem State Comic-Con attendees left with more than just fun stories; they got a glimpse of how Wright continues to evolve her passions and use her platform for good.
