In the latest episode of Distance Nerding, the hosts couldn’t stop talking about how Predator: Badlands turns the franchise upside down. Instead of the human characters running for their lives, this time the hunter becomes the hunted—and it sets up a completely fresh take on Yautja lore.
Predator: Badlands, directed by Dan Trachtenberg (who revitalized the series with Prey), arrives in theaters November 7, 2025. It introduces Dek, a young Predator cast out from his own clan, forced to survive a hostile world without his usual arsenal. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings Dek to life, portraying a Yautja who must adapt when stripped of his greatest advantages. Along the way, Dek forms an unlikely alliance with Thia, a synthetic android played by Elle Fanning in her first major action role. Rather than scream and flee, Thia teams up with Dek to face even larger—and more dangerous—alien creatures.
What really sets Badlands apart is its deep dive into Predator society. For the first time on film, audiences will hear the Yautja language spoken natively, a click-based tongue and cultural backstory crafted by the same linguist who created the Na’vi language for Avatar. This attention to linguistic and cultural detail hints at a richer world beyond the lone-hunter motif of earlier entries.
Visually, Badlands transports us to a remote planet of dense jungles and craggy badlands. The trailer teases massive indigenous fauna and ritualistic Predator ceremonies, suggesting that this installment will be as much about Dek’s inner journey—his struggles with identity and belonging—as about the physical battles he faces. With a script co-written by Prey veteran Patrick Aison, the film promises tight, character-driven storytelling that balances thrilling action with emotional stakes.
By humanizing its most fearsome creature, Predator: Badlands looks poised to reshape the franchise. Dek’s evolution from outcast to hero turns our expectations on their head, and viewers who tuned in to Distance Nerding will find this flipped dynamic a thrilling evolution. When the credits roll, we may never see the Predator simply as a monster again.
