The curtain has finally lifted on 007 First Light, IO Interactive’s highly anticipated James Bond game, and it’s clear this isn’t your father’s Bond. Revealed during today’s PlayStation State of Play, the cinematic trailer introduces a 26-year-old Bond at the very start of his journey, well before the suits, martinis, and world-ending gadgets.

IO Interactive, known for their meticulous work on the Hitman series, has taken a bold creative step with First Light. Instead of borrowing from decades of film canon, they’re building a fresh origin story. We meet Bond as an 11-year-old orphan following a tragic childhood event, raised in British boarding schools before serving in the Royal Navy. From there, MI6 brings him in, not as a suave veteran but as a recruit still discovering who he is.

The trailer teases a more grounded take, while still keeping the globe-trotting espionage and signature cool we expect from the franchise. You’ll be able to approach challenges your way: go loud with guns blazing or smooth talk your way through tense moments. It’s shaping up to be as much about identity and legacy as it is about action and gadgets.

One standout from the reveal was the casting of Lennie James, best known for The Walking Dead, in an undisclosed role. That casting alone suggests IO isn’t pulling punches when it comes to narrative heft.

While longtime fans of Hitman may be disappointed that the franchise is currently on pause, First Light appears to carry forward that same detailed design philosophy where player choice drives the experience. It also marks a rare four-platform release, landing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2.

Whether 007 First Light will spark a full trilogy as IO hopes remains to be seen. But based on this first showing, Bond’s next chapter is starting with real potential.
