Pokémon Legends: Z-A is officially launching on October 16, 2025, and the Pokémon community has plenty to be excited about. The game, which brings the action to a futuristic Lumiose City, will be available on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 — the latter via an upgrade pack priced at $10. Preorders kick off on June 5.
This latest entry in the Legends series introduces a new gameplay direction for Pokémon, promising a real-time battle system, action-RPG mechanics, and a story rooted in a single urban setting. With Lumiose City as the core environment, the story will explore the intertwining lives of people and Pokémon in a city on the brink of transformation.
Alongside the game’s release date, The Pokémon Company has also revealed box art for both editions. It showcases the main characters mid-battle against a Mega-Evolved Pokémon under the city lights — a visual nod to the game’s futuristic tone and the return of a beloved mechanic: Mega Evolution.

Switch 2 Upgrade Explained
Players who purchase Pokémon Legends: Z-A on Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition for $10 via the Nintendo eShop or My Nintendo Store. The enhanced edition boasts improved visuals and performance, optimizing the experience for Nintendo’s upcoming hardware.

What’s Next
A new Pokémon Presents showcase is scheduled for July 22, promising new reveals and updates across the Pokémon universe. It’s likely we’ll get a deeper look at the real-time battle mechanics and story direction of Z-A.
Between the Switch 2 support, a central urban setting, and a battle system shake-up, Pokémon Legends: Z-A might just be the boldest Pokémon title in years.
