Prime Video has officially canceled The Wheel of Time after three seasons, bringing an abrupt halt to the sprawling fantasy adaptation based on Robert Jordan’s acclaimed book series. The decision, announced over a month after the Season 3 finale aired on April 17, was attributed to financial concerns despite the show’s creative growth and international appeal.
Launched in 2021 with strong momentum, The Wheel of Time was one of Prime Video’s most-watched premieres, helping to establish the platform’s fantasy slate alongside The Rings of Power. Led by Rosamund Pike and co-produced by Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, the series drew acclaim for its ambitious world-building and faithful adaptation of the source material.
Although Season 3 was praised as the best yet—with a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score—viewership fell short of expectations. While it remained a top title in several countries and briefly returned to Nielsen’s Top 10 after the finale, it struggled to maintain consistent traction compared to earlier seasons.
Behind the scenes, Prime Video and Sony TV reportedly explored various scenarios to keep the show alive, but ultimately the cost outweighed the global returns. The final episode was designed with potential closure in mind, anticipating the possibility that it could serve as the series conclusion.
For longtime fans and newcomers alike, the cancellation is bittersweet. The show was hitting its stride creatively, and with 14 mainline books in the original series, it barely scratched the surface of its potential. Nonetheless, the series’ Emmy campaign will continue, and its three-season run remains a testament to the growing appetite for high fantasy storytelling on streaming platforms.
