The Lands Between are heading to the big screen.
Bandai Namco and FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed RPG Elden Ring is officially being adapted into a live-action film, with acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War) set to write and direct. The announcement, made Thursday, confirms that the fantasy epic is entering development under the banners of A24 and DNA Films, two studios known for prestige genre work and thoughtful world-building.

George R. R. Martin, who helped craft the game’s mythos alongside game director Hidetaka Miyazaki, is attached as a producer. Vince Gerardis, long-time collaborator on Game of Thrones, joins him, alongside DNA’s Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich.
So far, little is known about the plot, casting, or release timeline. FromSoftware’s exact role in the production also remains unclear, and Miyazaki’s involvement has not been confirmed.
What is clear is that Elden Ring—originally released in 2022 to widespread acclaim—is making a serious play at cinematic expansion. The game redefined FromSoftware’s punishing gameplay formula through its vast open world, atmospheric storytelling, and lore-rich design. Its blend of brutal combat and melancholic beauty resonated with millions, earning Game of the Year honors and becoming a modern classic.

The timing of the announcement feels deliberate. After the recent launch of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and the upcoming Nightreign multiplayer spinoff, the Elden Ring universe is rapidly evolving. A special Tarnished Edition is also on the way to Nintendo Switch 2, expanding the player base even further.
Back in 2024, Martin slyly hinted at a film adaptation, stoking fan theories. His confirmation at IGN Fan Fest 2025 that there had been “some talk” now feels less like a tease and more like groundwork. With Garland’s reputation for cerebral, genre-bending films, this may not be your standard swords-and-sorcery adaptation.
Instead, Elden Ring could become a bold, moody epic that pushes the fantasy genre into more surreal, haunting territory. If the team sticks close to the game’s themes—ambition, ruin, sacrifice—the movie has the potential to mirror the game’s legacy.
And for fans who’ve faced down Malenia a dozen times, the real question is: who’s brave enough to play her on screen?
