Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to expand its ambitious cast as it gears up for Seasons 2 and 3, adding a new wave of talent that fans of the original series may already recognize from key story arcs.

The recently confirmed lineup for Season 2 includes:
- Dichen Lachman (Severance) as Avatar Yangchen
- Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness) as both Lo and Li
- Terry Chen (Lucky Star) as Jeong Jeong
- Lily Gao (Blue Sun Palace) as Ursa
- Madison Hu (The Brothers Sun) as Fei
In Season 3, the roster grows with:
- Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon) as Hama
- Jon Jon Briones (Hadestown) as Piandao
These additions align closely with the structure of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, which ran from 2005 to 2008. Netflix’s adaptation is confirmed to follow that same three-season structure, wrapping the story with Book 3.
Production for Season 2 has just concluded, and Season 3 is heading into filming. This casting update suggests Netflix is staying committed to a consistent rollout, and keeping the production schedule tight, likely aiming for a 2025 release for Season 2.
While the series is co-produced by Netflix and Nickelodeon, it notably does not involve the original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who parted ways with the project in 2020 over creative differences. Since then, they’ve founded Avatar Studios and are moving ahead with a separate animated Avatar universe. Their next film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, is set for theatrical release in October 2026, and a new series titled Avatar: Seven Havens is already in production.
Netflix’s live-action series, led by Gordon Cormier (Aang), Kiawentiio (Katara), Ian Ousley (Sokka), and Dallas Liu (Zuko), has received mixed reception from longtime fans but managed to draw in a global audience. The new casting may signal stronger development of key character arcs, including some of the most emotionally rich and lore-heavy moments in the franchise.
With returning cast like Elizabeth Yu (Azula), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Iroh), and Daniel Dae Kim (Fire Lord Ozai), the series seems poised to tackle the intense Fire Nation-centric drama of Books 2 and 3, including Zuko’s family backstory and the rise of the White Lotus.
The final two seasons may be Netflix’s best shot at satisfying the deep narrative expectations fans have long carried since the original show aired.
