Netflix is taking another swing at animation with a high-profile adaptation that fans of mobile games will instantly recognize. The streamer has officially greenlit Clash, an animated comedy series based on Supercell’s mega hit franchises Clash of Clans and Clash Royale.

Clash will center on a hapless yet determined Barbarian tasked with uniting a chaotic group of misfit warriors to defend their village, while also trying to make sense of the ridiculous politics of cartoonish medieval warfare. The series promises to blend slapstick humor with lighthearted strategy, all set in the wildly popular Clash universe that has entertained players for over a decade.

Helming the project is Fletcher Moules, who previously directed Supercell’s cinematic YouTube shorts known for their polished visuals and comedic tone. Ron Weiner, whose writing credits include Futurama and Arrested Development, steps in as head writer, suggesting the show will lean heavily into meta comedy and absurdist humor.

Animation is being handled by ICON Creative Studio, known for its vibrant, high energy work that fits well with Clash’s over the top style.

The Clash of Clans and Clash Royale games have racked up over four billion downloads and a jaw dropping 180 billion hours of gameplay since their releases in 2012 and 2016 respectively. That massive built in audience makes Clash one of Netflix’s smartest bets in the animated space.

This announcement continues Netflix’s recent surge in adult and family animation. In the past month, the platform also revealed Mating Season, an adult comedy from the Big Mouth team, and Long Story Short from BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob Waksberg, debuting August 22.

With familiar faces behind the scenes and a franchise that’s already proven its staying power, Clash could be Netflix’s next animated hit, especially if it can capture the chaotic charm that made the games so iconic.
