Netflix’s long-gestating Gears of War movie just took a major step forward. After years in development limbo, the adaptation of Xbox’s iconic third-person shooter franchise is finally gaining momentum with action film heavyweight David Leitch now attached to direct. Known for Deadpool 2, John Wick, and Bullet Train, Leitch brings a proven pedigree of high-octane filmmaking. That style is a natural match for Gears of War’s brutal, cover-based combat and gritty tone.

Video game adaptations are having a moment. Following the critical and commercial success of The Last of Us on HBO, studios are diving deep into the well of gaming IP. While results have varied, Hollywood seems committed to cracking the code, and Netflix is betting big on Gears of War to be the next standout.

Also onboard is Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts, who is writing the script. Casting has not been revealed, but longtime fan-favorite Dave Bautista has openly campaigned to join the project. He even suited up in full COG armor for a Gears 5 promo. Whether or not he lands a role, his continued involvement has kept the project alive in fan circles.

No official plot details have been released, but expectations are high that the film will center around Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad as they battle the Locust Horde. Gears of War has a deep lore with room for original stories, but Netflix may choose to start with the classic arc that fans already love.

The timing is strategic. A remaster of the original Gears of War is expected to release on PS5 this summer, marking the first time the series reaches outside the Xbox ecosystem. A prequel game is also reportedly in development. Together with the film, it signals a full push to revive the franchise for a new generation.

This is the furthest a Gears adaptation has progressed. Netflix was once rumored to be considering Zack Snyder to direct, but his style has proven divisive in the past. With Leitch on board, Netflix seems to be leaning into a more grounded, adrenaline-fueled approach that could attract a broader audience.

Done right, Gears of War could be the next big hit in this new era of game-based storytelling.
