What began as a small, pandemic-era event in Idaho has transformed into a multi-hall pop culture celebration. On the latest episode of Distance Nerding, the hosts were joined by Gem State Comic Con founder Dave Hayworth to preview this year’s stacked guest list, expanded venue, and what fans can expect from the upcoming event on May 17–18 in Boise.

And it’s clear—this con isn’t just growing, it’s thriving.

A Guest Lineup That Punches Above Its Weight

Gem State 2025 boasts a guest list that rivals many larger cons. Among the headliners:

  • Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad)
  • Bonnie Wright (Harry Potter’s Ginny Weasley)
  • Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars)
  • Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls, Saw IV)
  • Brian O’Halloran & Marilyn Ghigliotti (from Clerks, doing a rare 18+ panel together)
  • Voice actors from Dragon Ball Z, Bleach, and Naruto

Hayworth even revealed that Marilyn Ghigliotti has called this her final West Coast appearance, making the event a rare chance for fans to meet her before she relocates to the East Coast.

More Than Just Panels

Beyond celebrity appearances, Gem State continues to invest in experiences. From a Godzilla-themed museum and cosplay crafting area, to 11 food trucks and a full kids’ zone, the con is designed to offer more than just a vendor hall. One building is dedicated entirely to activities, setting it apart from more commercial cons.

Hayworth’s goal? To make Gem State feel more like Disneyland than a corporate cash-in.

“You can’t just do vending halls and actors anymore. You need more,” Hayworth said on the show. “This year, we’ve got the whole enchilada.”

Looking Ahead: A Japanese Idol and International Growth

In a surprising teaser, Hayworth hinted at bringing a Japanese idol to the con in 2026 after meetings in Japan. This would mark a significant shift toward international talent, especially for fans of Super Sentai and Japanese pop culture. It’s clear that Gem State is thinking globally while keeping its local roots intact.

Final Thoughts

From humble beginnings during the COVID lockdowns to now taking over three full halls at Expo Idaho, Gem State Comic Con has come a long way. As the Distance Nerding team joked, if you’re anywhere near Boise—or even flying in from out of state—this is the year to go. Whether you’re there for the panels, the vendors, or the voice actors from your favorite anime, there’s something for every kind of fan.
