The Anime Plus Podcast crew recently raised concerns over a proposal from Donald Trump that could send shockwaves through the anime community. In Episode 191, hosts Aray and Aunn discussed how Trump’s proposed 100 percent tariff on foreign films might impact anime releases in the United States, including major titles from Demon Slayer, Studio Ghibli, and One Piece.

According to reporting from Variety and The New York Times, Trump has floated the idea of imposing steep tariffs on a wide range of foreign imports including entertainment media like movies as part of his 2025 economic agenda. While details remain speculative, the podcast zeroed in on the scenario where movie theaters might pass the cost increase directly to fans.

“If a ticket is 20 bucks, it’s going to be 40 bucks now,” Aray speculated. Aunn added that for anime lovers who regularly show up for theatrical releases, this could price them out entirely, especially if they’re planning to see canon-critical films like Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle.

The concern goes beyond just the cost of movie tickets. While the proposed tariff is currently aimed at movies, many anime projects are multinational in production. It’s still unclear how outsourced animation or licensing agreements might be classified under such a tariff, leaving streaming services like Crunchyroll or Netflix in a gray zone. If future legislation expanded to include all foreign media, subscription prices could also rise.

The topic sparked frustration and jokes on the podcast, with the hosts jokingly musing about becoming “pirate kings” if anime becomes unaffordable. But the underlying worry was real. Anime, which has increasingly become a major box office draw in the U.S., could face serious setbacks if financial barriers push fans away from theaters.

With the popularity of anime growing rapidly and box office records being shattered by recent releases like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and The First Slam Dunk, this tariff conversation hits at a time when anime is finally becoming mainstream. The Anime Plus Podcast highlighted how fans have fought hard for anime to be taken seriously, and they’re not eager to see its momentum slowed by policy decisions far removed from the fandom.

As Aray summed up in the episode, “You’re going on a date to see Demon Slayer, that’s more expensive than dinner.”
