Happy New Comic Book Day, comic fans. This week’s releases bring a variety of bold stories, from classic heroes reimagined to ambitious new sci-fi concepts. Below are my top picks, with brief summaries and source links for more details.

X-Men #16 (Marvel Comics)
There are mutants who call themselves X-Men in Alaska and Louisiana and Chicago. But as Cyclops’ team find themselves in more than one set of crosshairs dealing with a mutant crisis in Alaska, a new group of enemies make themselves known: They are the X-Men, who are sponsored by 3K in their bid for possession of the future of mutantkind!

Absolute Superman #7 (DC Comics)
His stolen alien technology is at the heart of Lazarus Corp’s global success. But he operates out of a seedy lair, packed with bottled cities… cities he tortures relentlessly, just to hear the faint chorus of screams. Who is the mysterious Brainiac? And why is he so interested in the Last Son of Krypton?

Star Wars #1 (Marvel Comics)
An epic new adventure begins for Luke, Leia, and Han in the wake of Return of the Jedi! New York Times best-selling author Alex Segura launches the bold next era of Star Wars. Luke Skywalker must defend the New Republic from a bloodthirsty gang of mercenaries. Han Solo investigates a deadly underworld mystery—and saves a surprising ally. Leia Organa must grapple with a new alliance opposed to the goals of the New Republic.

Captain Planet #1 (Dynamite Comics)
The environmental icon returns in a new series from Dynamite. Writer David Pepose and artist Eman Casallos bring Captain Planet back to face the modern world’s ecological disasters. The reboot keeps the spirit of the original while updating its message for today’s audience.

Free Planet #1 (Image Comics)
Set in a future where humanity has established its first truly free world, “Free Planet” blends revolutionary politics with cosmic stakes. A diverse group of freedom fighters must defend this utopia from outside threats while debating the meaning of freedom itself. If you like “Saga” or “East of West,” this one should be on your radar.

Poison Ivy #33 (DC Comics)
An awful tragedy is unfolding, and it appears as though there’s nothing Pamela Isley can do to stop it. Will the verdant villain find a way through, or is her life about to hit an all-time new low?
Whether you’re here for legacy heroes or groundbreaking new series, this week’s comics offer something exciting. Check out your local shop or digital storefront and support the books that speak to you.
