In our latest Geek Freaks interview, we were joined by Rich Davis, the acclaimed creator of Cult of Dracula, to talk about his ambitious new series, Angel Hunter. This dark fantasy epic pulls together elements from manga, theology, and monster mythology into a fresh and daring story set in a world where humanity is clawing for survival after being cast out of Eden.

What started as a late-night idea inspired by Goblin Slayer has become a massive, 10-volume series with hundreds of pages planned—and it’s already turning heads in the indie comics scene.

From The Stage to The Page

Before diving into comics, Rich Davis was a playwright and screenwriter, and that theatrical flair still runs through his work. His breakout hit, Cult of Dracula, actually began as a stage play before evolving into a best-selling horror comic. “My background is in playwriting and screenwriting,” Davis explained, “so the jump to comics was natural. Writing for an artist is a lot like writing for a director of photography.”

When asked about the transition to longer-format books, Davis offered a pragmatic answer: “Floppies are dead.” As both a comic shop owner and a creator, Davis sees the challenges firsthand. “People are hesitant to invest in a floppy from an indie creator, but when I hand them a $9.99 trade, they buy three.”

A World Shaped by Myth and Nightmare

Angel Hunter doesn’t play by typical comic book rules. It’s inspired by manga in tone and presentation, but deeply rooted in Western apocryphal texts and Davis’ own vivid nightmares. The story begins with humanity fighting to survive in a world overrun by Nephilim and ruled by 13 fallen angels—giant warlords commanding armies of monstrous creatures. “It’s a blend of my fears and the mythology I grew up around,” Davis said. “A lot of the lore comes not from the Bible, but from apocryphal sources like the Book of Enoch and the Book of Giants.”

Despite pulling heavily from religious lore, Davis is careful with how he handles those themes. “Religion is personal. So I treat all of it—whether it’s the Bible or Norse mythology—as just that: mythology. I’m not here to preach or insult anyone.”

Meet Shiri Mojo: Angelic Warrior With a Secret

One of Angel Hunter’s most compelling figures is Shiri Mojo, the White Witch of Edessa. She’s humanity’s last real protector, serving as High Priestess of the Radiant God and defending Light City—the last known stronghold. “She’s a tragic figure,” Davis said, hinting at a major secret that will unfold in Volume Two. “She’s one of my favorite characters to write, and honestly, she was the first fully-formed character in the series.”

With long blond hair, commanding presence, and celestial strength, Shiri may appear like a standard fantasy protagonist—but Davis promises a depth that will challenge assumptions.

Building for the Long Haul

Unlike most indie books that struggle to get past issue five, Davis and his longtime collaborator Les are all-in. “We’ve outlined all ten volumes,” he shared. “By the end of this, we’ll have written over a thousand story pages.”

The pair are aiming for full-volume releases—starting with a 96-page Volume One—at an affordable price. “We’re trying to hit $19.99 per book, $24.99 max depending on tariffs. That’s a lot of content for that price.”

The decision isn’t just creative—it’s about respecting the reader. “I’ve seen too many Kickstarters fail to deliver issue two. Readers want something they can count on. So we’re giving them that upfront.”

Final Thoughts

If Cult of Dracula was Rich Davis proving he could deliver horror, Angel Hunter is him declaring that indie comics can be just as expansive, epic, and emotionally resonant as anything from the Big Two. With a compelling mythos, striking visuals, and a creative team that truly believes in the work, Angel Hunter feels like a breakout moment waiting to happen.
