The much-anticipated Harry Potter television series from Max is taking shape, as the streamer officially announces six actors joining the magical lineup. Four of these were previously rumored, now confirmed: John Lithgow will step into the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Joining them are Luke Thallon, cast as the timid yet pivotal Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as the cantankerous caretaker Argus Filch. Notably, Whitehouse is the only cast member so far with a connection to the original film franchise, having played Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The new series, helmed by writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials), promises a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga. Gardiner teams with director Mark Mylod (Succession), who will direct multiple episodes, alongside executive producers including Rowling herself, Neil Blair, and David Heyman of Harry Potter film fame.

With production set to begin this summer at the iconic Leavesden Studios, fans can expect a return to the same British soundstages that brought the original films to life. While the story will revisit Harry’s early days at Hogwarts, the TV adaptation aims to delve deeper than ever before, reportedly stretching across a full decade of storytelling.

Though casting continues for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, early casting calls suggest producers are searching for actors aged 9 to 11, signaling the series will start at the very beginning of the journey. Meanwhile, the confirmed cast boasts an impressive mix of award-winning talent and rising stars:

  • John Lithgow, an Emmy, Tony, and Olivier winner, steps into the formidable shoes of Hogwarts’ Headmaster.
  • Janet McTeer, an Oscar and Emmy nominee, takes on Professor McGonagall, following the legacy of Dame Maggie Smith.
  • Paapa Essiedu, known for I May Destroy You and The Lazarus Project, brings a fresh perspective to the complex Severus Snape.
  • Nick Frost, a fan favorite from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, will play Hagrid, the beloved Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts.
  • Luke Thallon, a relative newcomer, takes on the conflicted Professor Quirrell.
  • Paul Whitehouse, a seasoned actor and alum of the Harry Potter films, brings Argus Filch to life once more.

The creative team remains tight-lipped about how each season will be paced, but HBO and Max Content CEO Casey Bloys previously hinted at a slow-burn approach, allowing time to fully explore each novel. However, the Fantastic Beasts spin-offs will not be included, keeping the focus squarely on the original saga.

“We’re thrilled with the extraordinary talent joining our world of witches and wizards,” Gardiner and Mylod said in a joint statement. “We can’t wait to see these characters brought to life for a new generation of fans.”

As anticipation builds, all eyes remain on the next wave of casting announcements, particularly the search for the young trio who will carry the weight of the series on their shoulders. Until then, the magical doors of Hogwarts are slowly creaking open once again.
