A beloved martial arts saga is leaping from the silver screen to streaming. Prime Video and Sony Pictures Television are officially developing a television adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, bringing new life to the legendary tale of romance, honor, and swordplay.

The project will expand on the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Dulu, the same collection of novels that inspired Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed 2000 film. This new series aims to reintroduce audiences to the richly woven world of warriors Shu Lien and Mu Bai, set against breathtaking landscapes and high-stakes action. According to the series synopsis, the narrative centers on the two iconic fighters as they grapple with the tension between forbidden love and the changing tides of their era — balancing personal desires with their commitment to tradition.

Behind the camera, the series boasts an impressive creative team. Jason Ning, whose previous credits include Lucifer and The Brother Sun, is set to write and executive produce. He joins forces with veteran storyteller Ronald D. Moore, known for Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, who will also serve as executive producer through his company, Tall Ship Productions.

Additional executive producers include Johnny Levin, Roy Lee (Vertigo Entertainment), Maril Davis (Tall Ship Productions), and representatives from the Wang Dulu estate, Hong Wang and Qin Wang. Ying Lou is attached as co-executive producer.

Sony, which originally distributed the film adaptation through Sony Pictures Classics, retains rights to the Crane-Iron novels, making the collaboration with Prime Video a natural step toward expanding the franchise’s legacy.

Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon captured the imagination of audiences worldwide upon its release, winning four Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. The film’s success, combined with its enduring cultural footprint, sets a high bar for this television adaptation. Fans will no doubt be eager to see how the series pays homage to the original while forging its own path.

Casting details and a release window have not yet been announced, but with such a distinguished team at the helm, anticipation is already building for what could be one of streaming’s next epic sagas.
