The enormous popularity of A Minecraft Movie is lighting up box offices worldwide, but it’s also causing unexpected turbulence inside theaters. Several cinemas across the UK have begun issuing firm warnings to moviegoers after viral social media trends led to noisy, disruptive screenings.
At the heart of the issue are viral videos capturing crowds of young fans cheering, clapping, and even tossing popcorn during pivotal scenes, including Jack Black’s animated declaration, “I am Steve!” and the fan-favorite shout of “chicken jockey!” These outbursts, while a sign of enthusiastic fandom, have pushed some venues to take preventive action to maintain order.
Cineworld in Oxfordshire has posted clear notices informing attendees that disruptive behavior will lead to removal from the screening, with no refund offered. “Any form of anti-social behavior, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping, and shouting will not be tolerated,” the notice reads.
Other chains, including REEL Cinemas, are following suit. A representative from REEL emphasized, “To ensure everyone has the best possible cinema experience, we’re increasing monitoring. Disruptive actions, including those inspired by TikTok trends, will not be tolerated.” They added that police involvement remains a last resort, should situations escalate.
Further north, theaters in Glasgow have echoed these sentiments. Notices remind moviegoers to stay off their phones and refrain from making excessive noise, warning that failure to comply could result in ejection.
Despite these challenges, A Minecraft Movie continues to smash records. With a star-studded cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, the film has earned an eye-popping $313 million globally. It now holds the title of the biggest video game movie opening ever, outpacing previous franchise heavyweights.
Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy celebrated the success in an internal memo, calling it “a world-class achievement” and highlighting it as the studio’s most successful opening since 2023.
As theaters work to balance crowd control with fan excitement, the phenomenon underscores the passionate following Minecraft continues to inspire. The film remains in theaters, where audiences—ideally seated and respectful—can experience the adventure firsthand.
