Michael Sarnoski, best known for his work on Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, has been chosen to write and direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. The project unites A24, Kojima Productions, and Square Peg in a collaboration that aims to bring Hideo Kojima’s surreal, post-apocalyptic vision to the big screen.

The Death Stranding film marks another high-profile move for Sarnoski, who has earned acclaim for his intimate, atmospheric storytelling. His breakout feature, Pig, showcased a meditative tale of loss and resilience, while A Quiet Place: Day One expanded the popular horror franchise with a fresh perspective. He is also behind the forthcoming The Death of Robin Hood, continuing his growing partnership with A24.
While specific plot details for the film remain under wraps, fans of the original game will recognize its core premise: a fractured America struggling to rebuild amid supernatural threats and an impending extinction event. Hideo Kojima’s game, released in 2019, already blurred the lines between cinema and gameplay with its narrative ambition and visually striking world, making it a natural candidate for film adaptation.

The game featured an ensemble cast led by Norman Reedus as courier Sam Bridges, alongside Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Margaret Qualley, and even film director Guillermo del Toro. Whether any of these actors will reprise their roles in the live-action version has not been confirmed, but the possibility adds to the growing anticipation.
This news arrives as Kojima Productions gears up for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, slated for release on June 26, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5. The sequel is set to introduce new faces to the saga, including Luca Marinelli and Elle Fanning, expanding the star power Kojima’s projects are known for.
The announcement also renews hopes for successful game-to-film adaptations. Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid movie has seen slow progress, but Death Stranding seems well-positioned to break through. With Sarnoski’s thoughtful direction and Kojima’s storytelling pedigree, the adaptation could become one of the standout entries in the growing genre of cinematic video game projects.
