At Geek Freaks, we review a lot of content—movies, TV shows, games, comics—and we like to keep things consistent when it comes to scoring. Our 1–10 scale helps us break down the quality of a project in a way that’s simple, fair, and easy to understand. But what does each number really mean?

Here’s how we define each score on the Geek Freaks scale:

🔟 Masterpiece

This is the gold standard. A 10 is reserved for content that’s nearly flawless. It innovates, inspires, and sticks with us long after it’s over. These are the rare projects that redefine their genre or reach iconic status.

Example: “Invincible” or “The Last of Us (HBO)”

9️⃣ Outstanding

A must-watch/play/read. These are incredibly well-made with only minor flaws. A 9 may not be revolutionary, but it’s still top-tier and often one of the best in its category.

Example: “Baldur’s Gate 3” or “The Dark Knight”

8️⃣ Great

A solid, enjoyable experience. This content nails what it sets out to do, even if it doesn’t push boundaries. It’s reliable and recommended for most fans.

Example: “Loki Season 1” or “Super Mario Wonder”

7️⃣ Good

A 7 means it’s enjoyable but may have some noticeable flaws or inconsistencies. Still worth watching or playing, especially if you’re into the genre, but maybe not a standout.

Example: “Star Trek: Discovery” or “Black Widow”

6️⃣ Decent

It’s okay. Maybe there’s potential, or maybe it’s got a few standout elements, but the overall experience falls short. It’s a “watch it if you’re curious” kind of rating.

Example: “Anthem” (early game) or “The Flash (2023)”

5️⃣ Average

Middle of the road. It works, but there’s nothing special about it. A 5 isn’t necessarily bad—it just didn’t leave much of an impact.

4️⃣ Below Average

The flaws are starting to outweigh the strengths. Maybe it’s messy, repetitive, or just poorly executed. Might be worth checking out for curiosity’s sake or if you’re a hardcore fan.

3️⃣ Bad

Significantly flawed, often boring, broken, or frustrating. The vision didn’t come together, and you’re left wondering what went wrong.

Example: “Megalopolis” (our take: 3/10)

2️⃣ Very Bad

Barely functional or entertaining. This is where content actively wastes your time, and only extreme curiosity or niche interest could justify a watch or playthrough.

1️⃣ Terrible

Avoid at all costs. This is the bottom of the barrel—either deeply broken, offensive, or just a complete misfire on nearly every level.

Our Philosophy

We don’t just toss out numbers for shock value. Every score is backed by a conversation—what worked, what didn’t, and how it fits in with what came before. Context matters, especially with long-running franchises or genre expectations. We also try to keep our reviews honest, thoughtful, and spoiler-free whenever possible.

And yes—we do believe a 10 exists. It’s rare, but when something earns it, we celebrate it.
