As a father who took his family to see Disney’s 2025 live-action remake of “Snow White,” I approached the film with cautious optimism, especially given the mixed reviews circulating. However, our experience was largely positive, and I’d like to share this perspective.
True to Disney’s tradition, the film is a musical featuring several songs. While the opening number felt a bit flat, subsequent pieces resonated well, adding depth to the narrative. The story expands significantly beyond the original, incorporating moments of genuine humor that had us laughing and scenes that were emotionally stirring, nearly bringing me to tears. The overarching theme of rising against tyranny felt particularly motivating and timely.

Addressing the much-discussed portrayal of the dwarfs, I appreciated Disney’s approach. The seven dwarfs are depicted using motion capture CGI, intentionally differentiating them from human little people. This creative choice adds a whimsical, fairy-tale quality to their characters. Additionally, the inclusion of a supporting character among the rebels who is a little person, portrayed as a key figure within the team, was a thoughtful touch that promotes inclusivity without emphasizing differences. The presence of little people among the townsfolk further underscores this commitment to representation.

The love story between Snow White and the new character, Jonathan, a bandit leader, is well-developed and adds a fresh dynamic to the classic tale. Their evolving relationship, based on mutual support and shared goals, provides a modern take on the traditional romance.

Regarding performances, while Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the Evil Queen has been met with mixed reactions, I found her interpretation added a unique dimension to the character. Some scenes may linger in emotion, which might not appeal to everyone, but I personally appreciated these moments of depth.
In conclusion, despite the varied critiques, our family found “Snow White” to be an enjoyable and inspiring film. It successfully balances homage to the original with contemporary updates, making it a worthwhile watch for both longtime fans and newcomers.
