British actor and comedian Nick Frost is in advanced negotiations to play Rubeus Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” television series, according to individuals familiar with the production.

Frost, widely recognized for his roles in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is poised to take on the role of the beloved half-giant, a cornerstone character in the magical world of Hogwarts. The original Hagrid, played memorably by the late Robbie Coltrane in the film series, served as both the gamekeeper and later a professor at the wizarding school.

This casting development adds to a growing list of high-profile names connected to the series. John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu are reportedly set to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore, Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Professor Severus Snape, respectively.

Though HBO has not officially confirmed Frost’s involvement, speculation has been mounting following a cryptic Instagram post by the actor on March 20 that read, “It’s happening, it’s actually happening.” Fans also noted his recent social media follows of alleged cast members Lithgow and Essiedu as further evidence of his potential role.

In a brief statement, HBO acknowledged the heightened attention surrounding the series but emphasized that no casting announcements would be confirmed until deals are finalized.

Slated to be a decade-long adaptation, the new Harry Potter series is being developed by writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) and director Mark Mylod (Succession). The series is being promoted as a “faithful” reimagining of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga, with each season expected to correspond closely to one novel.

Frost’s potential casting as Hagrid marks a significant tonal choice for the production. Known for blending heartfelt sincerity with sharp comedic timing, Frost could bring a new dimension to the character while honoring the legacy left by Coltrane.

The series is still in early pre-production, with no official release date announced.
