Six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow is reportedly close to joining HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” television adaptation as Albus Dumbledore, according to individuals familiar with the negotiations. The project is expected to be a decade-long endeavor, adapting each of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling novels in extensive detail.

Lithgow, who has portrayed figures such as Winston Churchill in “The Crown” and Roald Dahl on stage, is believed to be the first major actor nearing a deal for the new series. HBO executives have declined to confirm or deny the reports, saying in a statement that they “will only confirm details as [they] finalize deals.” Francesca Gardiner (writer and showrunner) and Mark Mylod (director and executive producer) are spearheading the production, with filming set to take place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the original home of the “Harry Potter” films.

A respected performer with a career spanning theater, television, and film, Lithgow has earned multiple accolades, including a Tony Award for stage work. Past portrayals of Dumbledore include the late Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Jude Law in various “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” films. The potential casting of an American actor has sparked discussions among fans, but observers note Lithgow’s proven ability to capture British roles effectively.

An official release date for the “Harry Potter” series has not been announced, but executives previously stated a target window of late 2026 to early 2027. With more than 30,000 audition tapes submitted for the lead roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, anticipation for any casting news has remained high among the franchise’s global fan base.

Lithgow’s recent work includes the film “Conclave,” a lead role in the indie project “Jimpa,” and appearances in FX’s “The Old Man.” He is represented by UTA, Anonymous Content, Hansen Jacobson Teller, and Viewpoint.
