Ulrich Thomsen has officially joined the DC Universe, securing a recurring role as Sinestro in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns. Produced in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, the show brings the beloved Green Lantern mythology to live action under the guidance of co-writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. James Hawes has been tapped to direct the first two episodes, with Mundy, Lindelof, King and Hawes also serving as executive producers alongside Ron Schmidt.

Lanterns follows two intergalactic law enforcers, the seasoned Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler) and his newly recruited partner John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), as they investigate a mysterious Earth-bound case linked to a chilling murder in the American heartland. Their discovery leads them into a dark conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Green Lantern Corps.
Thomsen steps into the role of Sinestro, a former member of the Green Lantern Corps who has become a fearsome antagonist. Known for his unwavering ambition and commanding presence, Sinestro poses a potent threat to his one-time mentee, Hal Jordan. In the comic canon, Sinestro first appeared in 1961’s Green Lantern Vol. 2, #56, created by John Broome and Gil Kane. He has since evolved into one of DC’s most complex supervillains.
The casting of Thomsen adds international star power to an ensemble that already includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as modern cowboy William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, a new character who could hold the key to John Stewart’s personal life. Thomsen’s expansive résumé encompasses a leading role in Cinemax’s Banshee as Kai Proctor, a recurring arc on NBC’s The Blacklist, a memorable stint in Starz’s Counterpart, and a role in HBO’s The Young Pope. Most recently, the Danish actor led the critically praised Scandinavian drama Trom and will next appear in the thriller Run opposite Amanda Plummer.
Filmed under the watchful eye of HBO’s prestigious production team, Lanterns aims to deliver a fresh perspective on DC’s iconic space cops while staying true to their roots. The series is set to draw viewers into an interstellar realm where loyalty, justice and betrayal collide in spectacular fashion.
