Filmmaker Robert Eggers will continue his streak of reimagining classic tales by taking the helm of a sequel to Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, the 1986 fantasy film that famously starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Industry insiders say Eggers will write and direct the project, partnering again with Icelandic author Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman.

Although a sequel has been on Hollywood’s radar for years—previously with Sinister director Scott Derrickson attached—new information suggests TriStar and The Jim Henson Company have tapped Eggers to inject his signature style into the beloved franchise. Details about the storyline remain under wraps, but the original film followed Connelly’s character as she journeyed through a mystical maze to save her infant brother from the Goblin King, portrayed by Bowie.

Eggers is coming off the release of his gothic horror remake Nosferatu, which opened last Christmas and earned praise for its haunting visuals. He is also set to direct a werewolf film titled Werwulf, rumored to be set in 13th-century England with period-accurate Old English dialogue. The project is reportedly aiming for a December 2026 release.

While Labyrinth broke new ground in puppet design and dark fantasy imagery under Henson’s guidance, Eggers’s reputation for immersive storytelling could give the sequel a fresh yet respectful approach. Fans of the cult classic are already speculating on who might step into Bowie’s towering shoes or how the new film will pay tribute to his legacy.
