The eco-hero we grew up with is back! Captain Planet is returning in a brand-new comic series from Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery, marking the first time in over 30 years that the iconic character has graced the pages of a comic book. Written by David Pepose (Space Ghost, Cable) and illustrated by Eman Casallos (Vampirella, Pathfinder), the series is a modern take on the classic 90s cartoon that inspired a generation to care about the planet.

The new series brings back the Planeteers — Kwame, Wheeler, Linka, Gi, and Ma-Ti — five teens from across the world who use their elemental rings to summon Captain Planet in the fight against environmental destruction. It’s not just nostalgia, though; the comic dives into new territory, starting with Gaia being kidnapped by classic villain Lucian Plunder. The Planeteers will have to figure out their powers — and how to work as a team — while battling the odds.

A Modern Take on a Classic Hero

Writer David Pepose describes this project as a personal passion, calling Captain Planet his “white whale” in terms of dream projects. He promises to give each Planeteer their time to shine, all while blending the fun of the original series with themes that resonate today. And yes, fans of the cartoon will see plenty of familiar faces, including some of the show’s iconic villains.

In a fitting tribute to the show’s environmental message, Dynamite is printing the comics on 70% recycled paper. The first issue drops on April 23, just in time for Earth Day, and it even comes with variant covers from artists like Mark Spears, Christian Ward, and Jae Lee.

Why Now?

With environmental concerns becoming more urgent, Captain Planet’s return feels like perfect timing. This isn’t just about reliving childhood memories; it’s about connecting those lessons to the challenges we face today. Whether you’re a longtime fan or meeting Captain Planet for the first time, this comic series looks like a great way to carry his message forward.
