After months of speculation and a steady stream of leaks, Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in 2025. The announcement, made via a brief trailer, provided a glimpse at the next-generation console and teased a new installment in the Mario Kart series. However, full details won’t be available until a dedicated Nintendo Direct airs on April 2, 2025.

What We Know So Far

The trailer revealed a redesigned console with larger dimensions, enhanced graphics capabilities, and revamped Joy-Con controllers. Notably, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature backward compatibility, allowing players to enjoy both physical and digital titles from the original Nintendo Switch library. However, a disclaimer noted that certain games might not be fully compatible, with further details to be shared on Nintendo’s official site.

A screen from the trailer confirmed:

“Plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as Nintendo Switch games.”

This backward compatibility is a significant draw for fans, ensuring the new console can integrate smoothly with existing game collections.

A Glimpse of the Next Mario Kart

Nintendo also showcased a snippet of gameplay from what appears to be a brand-new Mario Kart game. The footage featured a desert highway with cheering Toads and a Yoshi’s Diner along the route. While familiar characters like Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi made appearances, the karts sported a more compact, rounded design, distinguishing this entry from its predecessor, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Nintendo has yet to confirm the game’s official title or release date, though it is widely expected to launch alongside the Switch 2.
