Jason Momoa, best known for his role as Aquaman in Warner Bros and DC films, is officially stepping into the role of Lobo, the antihero bounty hunter, in the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Deadline confirmed the news, which Momoa later celebrated with an Instagram post showcasing his excitement about playing the character he has long admired.

A Long-Awaited Match
Momoa has been linked to the role of Lobo for years, even before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins at DC. The actor has often expressed his enthusiasm for playing the cigar-smoking, irreverent Czarnian. “I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” Momoa shared in a past interview. Today, he confirmed his casting by sharing an Instagram post captioned, “They called.”
Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983. Known for his chaotic, violent tendencies and dark humor, Lobo is a stark departure from the heroic and regal Aquaman.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Details
The movie, directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella), will be based on Tom King’s acclaimed 2022 comic series of the same name, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. While plot details remain under wraps, the film promises a mix of intergalactic adventure and emotional depth.
Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) is set to star as Supergirl, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill. Eve Ridley recently joined the cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle, a character central to Supergirl’s journey.
What This Means for Momoa and DC
Momoa’s casting as Lobo signals a bold new direction for DC under Gunn and Safran’s leadership. While his tenure as Aquaman brought in over $1.5 billion globally, Lobo represents an edgier character that aligns with Gunn’s penchant for offbeat antiheroes.
Beyond Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Momoa has a packed schedule. He stars in Warner Bros’ Minecraft movie (April 4), the live-action/animated Animal Friends, and the Apple miniseries Chief of War. Fans can also catch him alongside Dave Bautista in Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew.
Production for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow begins January 13, setting the stage for what could be a pivotal chapter in DC’s cinematic evolution.
