DC Studios has officially approved a feature film based on Clayface, the shapeshifting Batman villain. The script, written by “Doctor Sleep” filmmaker Mike Flanagan, was announced after the success of the HBO series The Penguin. Production is slated to begin early next year.

Producers Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will oversee the project under 6th & Idaho Productions. Flanagan, who proposed the idea to DC in 2023, previously expressed his desire for a horror/thriller interpretation of Clayface in a 2021 tweet. However, due to his commitments to other projects, including The Exorcist reboot and an adaptation of Carrie, DC is expected to appoint another director soon.

Clayface debuted in 1940 as a disgruntled actor turned criminal. His shapeshifting powers, introduced in 1961, have made him a versatile antagonist in various adaptations, including Batman: The Animated Series and Harley Quinn.

The decision reflects DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s mission to explore diverse tones within the DC Universe, expanding their repertoire to cater to varying audiences and genres.
