The critically acclaimed animated series Arcane has concluded with the release of its second season, but Riot Games is only beginning its journey into the expansive world of Runeterra. In a recent interview with League of Legends content creator Necrit, Riot’s creative director and Arcane showrunner Christian Linke shared that the studio is already investing in three Runeterra regions for future animated projects: Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia.

Exploring New Regions

While Arcane masterfully brought the dual cities of Piltover and Zaun to life, its second season teased the brutal, war-torn empire of Noxus. This region, home to powerful champions like Darius and Draven, is described as a “brutal, expansionist empire” and could serve as a fascinating setting for future narratives. It also connects deeply to Arcane’s existing storyline through the Medarda family.

Ionia, on the other hand, offers a stark contrast. Known as an island of natural beauty and magic, this peaceful region was thrust into conflict when invaded by Noxus. With fan-favorite champions like Yasuo, Ahri, and Zed hailing from Ionia, this mystical land has immense narrative potential.

Lastly, Demacia, the “proud, lawful kingdom” with a storied military history, is another focus. With champions like Garen and Lux, Demacia is ripe for tales of loyalty, courage, and the cost of maintaining order.

Listening to Fans

Linke revealed that Riot Games heavily considers fan feedback when selecting regions and characters to spotlight. Reddit polls and community discussions have guided their decisions, ensuring that the stories resonate with League of Legends fans. “We don’t just go with who’s popular because they win,” Linke said. “We pay attention to where there’s resonance.”

The Arcane Legacy and What’s Next

While Arcane has set the bar incredibly high, its enormous budget has sparked debates. With reports of the series costing $250 million for two seasons, Riot’s investment in quality storytelling and stunning visuals has paid off in terms of critical acclaim and fan adoration.

Looking ahead, Riot aims to craft a slate of animated stories across multiple regions of Runeterra. Although fans may have to wait some time before seeing the next project, Linke reassured them that the studio is committed to delivering meaningful, character-driven narratives.

As Riot Games embraces the vast storytelling potential of its universe, one thing is clear: the world of Runeterra is just beginning to unfold on our screens.
