One of the most beloved MMORPGs, Final Fantasy XIV, is officially making its way to mobile devices. The mobile version, developed by Tencent subsidiary LightSpeed Studios (known for PUBG Mobile), aims to bring the magic of Eorzea to players on the go. This announcement follows in the footsteps of other popular franchises like Diablo and Monster Hunter, signaling a growing trend of AAA online multiplayer games venturing into the mobile space.
What’s New in Final Fantasy XIV Mobile?
LightSpeed Studios promises a “fresh, mobile-friendly format” while retaining the essence of the original. Here’s what we know:
- Familiar Features: Lifestyle content like chocobo racing, Triple Triad, and fishing are confirmed to return, keeping the heart of FFXIV intact.
- Visuals on Mobile: Players can expect the immersive graphics Final Fantasy XIV is known for, including over 600 weather patterns and intricate time-of-day systems.
- Core Gameplay: Combat mechanics and the story grandeur of A Realm Reborn will be recreated for mobile, with non-combat systems like Disciples of the Land and Hand faithfully implemented.
Producer Naoki Yoshida Weighs In
Final Fantasy XIV Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida called the mobile game a “sister to Final Fantasy XIV.” He emphasized the goal of creating a comparable experience on mobile platforms. “It has been 11 years since FFXIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn launched, and this new mobile game will be a sister to FFXIV, aiming to recreate the grandeur of the original’s story and combat mechanics on mobile devices,” Yoshida shared in the release.
While details about cross-progression or expansion content are still unclear, Yoshida expressed confidence in the project’s ability to grow alongside FFXIV’s passionate community.
A Proven Legacy, Now on Mobile
First released in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has set a high standard for MMORPGs with its rich storytelling, expansive world, and deep respect for Final Fantasy’s history. With critically acclaimed expansions like Dawntrail, the franchise has continued to evolve, and fans have high expectations for the mobile adaptation.
What’s Next?
The game’s development is still underway, and LightSpeed Studios is working to ensure that FFXIV Mobile matches the quality of its PC and console counterparts. Questions remain about whether the mobile game will launch with A Realm Reborn’s original content only or include expansion material. Either way, it’s clear this project is a major step for the Final Fantasy franchise.
