Luca Guadagnino, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Call Me by Your Name and Queer, is in talks to direct Sgt. Rock, a project from DC Studios. Daniel Craig, who starred in Guadagnino’s Queer, is reportedly being considered for the lead role. While no agreements have been finalized, the movie would mark Guadagnino’s first foray into the DC cinematic universe, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The screenplay, penned by Challengers writer Justin Kuritzkes, is said to be ready for production.

Sgt. Rock, a character created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, debuted in DC Comics in 1959 and gained prominence during World War II-themed stories. Known for his resilience and combat skills, Sgt. Rock became a staple of DC’s wartime storytelling. The new film adaptation could serve as a creative departure from Gunn’s Superman: Legacy and upcoming Creature Commandos, which will launch on Max, Dec. 5. Details on which storyline the film will adapt remain under wraps.

Before moving to this project, Guadagnino is set to release After the Hunt on Amazon MGM Studios. Meanwhile, Craig has received a European Film Award nomination for his role in Queer, which opens Nov. 27.
