Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington confirmed he will join the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther franchise. During an interview with Australia’s The Today Show, Washington mentioned that director Ryan Coogler is currently writing a role for him, signaling Washington’s debut in the celebrated Marvel series.

Washington, currently promoting his role in the upcoming Gladiator sequel directed by Ridley Scott, hinted at his selective approach to new roles. “I’m only interested in working with the best,” he said. “I want to do things I haven’t done,” adding that he plans to explore roles like Othello and Hannibal in future projects. After mentioning his possible retirement, Washington disclosed Coogler’s involvement, saying, “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther.”

Though details about Washington’s character or the storyline remain undisclosed, this addition will mark a significant expansion of the Black Panther legacy, especially following the success of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which grossed $850 million worldwide.

Washington will first be seen in Gladiator 2, set for release on Friday.
