Disney and 20th Century Animation have announced a new addition to the Ice Age franchise, marking the sixth installment in the popular animated series. The news broke Friday at Disney’s D23 event in São Paulo, Brazil, where the company revealed that original cast members Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg will reprise their roles in the upcoming production.
The Ice Age franchise, originally created by Blue Sky Studios, was acquired by Disney through its 20th Century Fox merger in 2019. Disney closed the Oscar-winning Blue Sky division shortly after, making this sequel the first Ice Age film under Disney’s full direction.
Though release details remain unconfirmed, including a potential theatrical premiere, the franchise has grossed $3.2 billion across five films. The highest-grossing entry, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), made over $886 million worldwide, while the most recent film, Collision Course (2016), earned $408.5 million. Additionally, the series has expanded with shorts, TV series, and the 2022 spin-off The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.
Since debuting in 2002, the Ice Age series has featured beloved pre-historic characters—a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, and a sloth—embarking on comedic adventures in a shifting landscape. Disney aims to reignite interest in the animated world that has captivated audiences for two decades, with details about the sequel expected in coming months.
