Lucasfilm has signed a deal with producer and writer Simon Kinberg to create a new trilogy of Star Wars films, according to sources familiar with the matter. Kinberg, known for his extensive experience in franchise blockbusters, will write and produce the films alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
While the trilogy initially sparked rumors of continuing the Skywalker storyline into Episodes X-XII, sources close to the project indicate this new trilogy will veer away from the original storyline. Instead, it is expected to introduce fresh characters and plotlines, running parallel to other upcoming Star Wars ventures from directors like James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. Representatives for Lucasfilm and Disney have declined to comment on specifics.

Kinberg has worked with Lucasfilm before, notably co-creating the animated series Star Wars Rebels and serving as a consultant on Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which revived the franchise in 2015. His reputation as a versatile creator extends to other major franchises, including X-Men, Deadpool, and Sherlock Holmes.
In addition to his work on Star Wars, Kinberg is currently producing Paramount’s remake of The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright, and is attached to a Star Trek project directed by Toby Haynes.
