Big news, Lego fans! Universal is taking a fresh swing at the Lego movie franchise, but this time, they’re going live-action. The studio has tapped some big-name directors, including Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Jake Kasdan (Jumanji), and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), each bringing their own style to a new Lego movie. Here’s what we know so far and why this could be an exciting new chapter for Lego on the big screen.

Who’s Bringing These New Lego Films to Life?
Universal isn’t holding back with their director lineup for these live-action Lego movies:
- Patty Jenkins – Known for Wonder Woman, Jenkins will direct and co-write her movie alongside former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns. So, expect an action-packed Lego story with some creative twists.
- Jake Kasdan – With his experience in adventure-comedy (Jumanji), Kasdan’s Lego movie could bring a fun and upbeat vibe. The script was crafted by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, based on a concept by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
- Joe Cornish – Cornish, who directed Attack the Block, is known for adding a bit of grit to his projects. He’s working off a draft by Rick & Morty writer Heather Anne Campbell, based on a treatment by Simon Rich, so we might get something edgier.
They’re keeping plot details quiet for now, but having these three unique directors on board hints that each movie will bring something different to the Lego world.
Lego’s Shift from Animation to Live-Action
Since The Lego Movie came out in 2014, the Lego franchise has been an animated hit, with follow-ups like The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. But after The Lego Movie 2 in 2019, things went quiet on the Lego movie front.
Universal stepped in by signing a five-year deal in 2020 to create their own Lego movies, setting the stage for this new live-action chapter. It’s a big shift, and it sounds like Universal is ready to experiment with fresh storytelling styles and visuals for Lego fans.
Universal’s live-action Lego movies are shaping up to be something completely different from the animated hits. With Jenkins, Kasdan, and Cornish in the director’s chairs, these films might just reinvent how we see Lego on the big screen.
