Avatar: The Last Airbender has become a staple of geek culture, captivating fans since its Nickelodeon debut. Over the years, the universe has grown with sequels, live-action adaptations, and now, another major addition to the story is on the horizon. Dark Horse Comics has just announced a new series at New York Comic Con that fans are buzzing about: Avatar: The Last Airbender – Ashes of the Academy will debut in March 2025, and this time, the focus is on Zuko’s half-sister.

Kiyi Steps Into the Spotlight
The comic takes place after the original Avatar series, during Zuko’s reign as Fire Lord. It introduces a storyline where Zuko’s younger half-sister, Kiyi, enrolls at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls. Known for its strict rules and even stricter staff, Zuko is understandably worried about Kiyi’s future at the academy. According to the comic’s blurb, when the new headmistress raises concerns, Zuko places his trusted ally Mai in a teaching position to keep a close eye on Kiyi.
The big question: Will Mai’s watchful presence guide Kiyi in the right direction, or will the academy’s harsh culture shape her into someone more like her other half-sibling, the notorious Azula?
A Star Team Behind the Comic
This new series, Ashes of the Academy, is being led by an incredible creative team. The writer, Faith Erin Hicks, joins forces with the original Avatar co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, promising a story that stays true to the rich legacy of the show. Visuals for the comic are being brought to life by artist Peter Wartman, with colors by Adele Matera and lettering by Comicraft. With such a strong team at the helm, this series is set to capture the hearts of longtime fans.
Zuko’s Family Drama Continues
Ashes of the Academy gives us another dive into Zuko’s complicated family. For years, fans have been drawn to the drama surrounding Fire Lord Ozai, Azula, and Uncle Iroh, and now, Zuko’s half-sister Kiyi steps into the spotlight. Readers will get a chance to explore her backstory, adding yet another layer to Zuko’s already intricate family dynamic. Can Zuko balance his responsibilities as Fire Lord and as a brother, or will the academy push Kiyi down a darker path?
What’s Next for Avatar: The Last Airbender?
The excitement surrounding Ashes of the Academy is just one part of the Avatar universe’s next big chapter. Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is in full swing, with season two currently in production. Miya Cech has joined the cast to play Toph, a fan-favorite character, and anticipation for her portrayal is at an all-time high.
But that’s not all—Avatar Studios is also bringing the animated world back in a big way. The first major project is Aang: The Last Airbender, an animated movie set to feature actor-singer Eric Nam as Aang. With multiple projects on the way, including both animated and live-action, it’s clear that the Avatar universe has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
