NYCC 2024 has come and gone, but we’re still buzzing about all the incredible announcements. From Marvel’s Rise of Emperor Doom to DC’s Creature Commandos, this year’s event gave us plenty to look forward to. But the excitement didn’t stop there! The highly anticipated Silent Hill 2 Remake has dropped, and we’re here to give you the full breakdown of what’s new and what works—or doesn’t. Let’s dive in!
Marvel’s Big Reveal: Rise of Emperor Doom
One of the biggest surprises from NYCC 2024 was Marvel’s announcement of Rise of Emperor Doom, set to hit shelves in 2025. This five-issue series will see Doctor Doom taking on the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, an upgrade that amplifies his already formidable powers. But it’s not your typical superhero brawl. Some of Earth’s heroes actually side with Doom, believing his iron-fisted rule may be the protection Earth needs from outside threats. This storyline promises to deliver the kind of moral complexity we loved in Civil War, with heroes split over what’s best for humanity.
With Doctor Doom entering the MCU, this comic series will serve as an exciting primer for his eventual cinematic debut. And with Robert Downey Jr. rumored to be involved, we can’t wait to see how this plays out on screen!
DC’s Creature Commandos: A New Direction for the DCU?
The DCU has had its ups and downs, but James Gunn is leading the charge in a fresh direction. His next big project? Creature Commandos, a team-up of Universal-style monsters working for Amanda Waller. Think Suicide Squad, but with a horror twist. We’re getting major League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vibes, and we’re here for it.
Gunn’s past work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad gives us hope that this monster mash will deliver the perfect blend of humor, action, and heart. With Gunn steering the DCU’s ship, we’re excited to see how this new era unfolds.
Silent Hill 2 Remake: A Faithful Yet Flawed Return
Horror fans, rejoice! The Silent Hill 2 Remake is finally here. If you were a fan of the original, you’ll find plenty to love. The haunting atmosphere, the eerie fog, and the psychological horror elements are all present and accounted for. But while the game is faithful to the original in many ways, there are a few missteps.
Our reviewer Kyle noted that while the remake stays true to the tone of the original, it suffers from pacing issues. The new open-world elements and expanded town of Silent Hill add to the experience, but at times, they feel like unnecessary padding. “It felt like they were just stretching out the story to justify the $70 price tag,” Kyle said.
On the plus side, the environments are stunning, and the music—faithfully carried over from the original—is as chilling as ever. And while Maria, one of the key characters, could have been better developed, James, the protagonist, is brought to life beautifully by a fantastic voice actor.
In short, the Silent Hill 2 Remake is worth playing, especially if you’re a fan of the original. But be prepared for some longer-than-necessary segments that could have been trimmed for a tighter experience.
Other NYCC 2024 Highlights
It wasn’t all about Doom and monsters at NYCC 2024. We also got a look at the Wolfman trailer, a reboot of the Universal classic. The film leans into old-school practical effects, giving it an intimate, terrifying feel as a group of survivors are trapped in a cabin with a werewolf. If you love the classic monster movies, this one’s for you.
And, of course, there’s Daredevil: Born Again. With a confirmed release date of March 2025, fans can expect the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. It looks like the Netflix version of Daredevil isn’t dead after all, but rather being given a fresh coat of MCU paint. Daredevil fans, rejoice!
