DC Studios is cooking up something big for fans of Gotham City, as sources have confirmed the studio is in early development on a new film centered around two iconic villains: Bane and Deathstroke. Following the success of The Joker and the much-anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, the studio is clearly not finished with Batman’s rogues’ gallery. The news has set geek culture enthusiasts buzzing, especially with the announcement that Matthew Orton will be penning the script.

What We Know So Far

According to Deadline, while the movie is in its early stages, there are a few details that have surfaced:

  • Matthew Orton has been tapped to write the screenplay. Orton’s name might ring a bell for comic fans since he’s worked on the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World for Marvel Studios. His other credits include Devil’s Peak and Cleaner, so we’re expecting a strong script with a unique take on these beloved characters.
  • James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios co-heads, are producing the film. They’ve had a solid track record lately, and with Gunn’s experience weaving complex narratives in the superhero genre, fans can feel optimistic about this project.
  • No director has been named yet, and plot details are still vague. It’s confirmed that both Bane and Deathstroke will be featured, but it’s unclear if they will be the film’s main focus or part of a larger ensemble. Either way, their inclusion is a huge win for fans of these complex villains.

Bane and Deathstroke: Gotham’s Most Dangerous

Fans of Batman are well acquainted with both characters, and their appearances have made lasting impressions on the big screen.

  • Bane saw a huge spike in popularity thanks to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, with Tom Hardy’s portrayal of the venom-fueled villain making Bane a household name. In the comics, Bane is known for his brilliant mind and physical prowess, being one of the few who’s “broken the Bat” both physically and mentally.
  • Deathstroke, though slightly more obscure to mainstream audiences, has a cult following among DC fans. Played by Joe Manganiello in a cameo during the credits of Justice League, Deathstroke is a master assassin with enhanced abilities, often facing off against Batman and the Teen Titans. Though plans for Manganiello’s return were shelved, this new development suggests that DC sees great potential in the character.

What’s Next for DC Studios?

With the shake-up at DC Studios, spearheaded by Gunn and Safran, this new project could represent another piece of their long-term strategy to flesh out the DC Universe. After reshuffling previous plans, it’s clear they are placing a renewed focus on Gotham’s rich tapestry of characters. Bane and Deathstroke are both layered and complex, making them perfect for a film that digs into the darker side of DC’s universe.

It’s also worth noting Orton’s experience with Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World. Could this cross-studio experience bring a fresh perspective to DC? Fans will just have to wait and see.

We’ll keep you updated on any developments as they happen, but with these pieces falling into place, it’s safe to say that excitement is building for what’s to come!
