The colossal world of Pacific Rim is set to expand once more! Legendary is bringing back the epic kaiju-filled universe with a brand new series that promises to dive deep into the origins of the franchise. This exciting development comes as part of a fresh first-look deal with Eric Heisserer, the talented writer behind hits like Arrival and Bird Box.

Unveiling the Pacific Rim Prequel Series

Variety has revealed the first details about this prequel series, which is currently in development. Heisserer, who has a proven track record across movies and TV, will be at the helm of this new project. Known for his work on films like The Thing prequel (2011) and Lights Out (2016), as well as creating the popular Netflix series Shadow and Bone, Heisserer is set to explore the roots of the Pacific Rim universe under his Chronology production company. He’ll be collaborating with Carmen Lewis on this venture.

Legendary Television president Jason Clodfelter expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself. We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

The Legacy of Pacific Rim

The Pacific Rim franchise has always been larger than life, both in story and scale. It all began in 2013 with the original film directed by Guillermo del Toro. The movie captured the imaginations of audiences worldwide with its gritty depiction of humanity’s fight for survival against fearsome kaiju using giant mechs known as Jaegers. The sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), kept the action going, and Netflix even expanded the universe with an anime spinoff, Pacific Rim: The Black in 2021.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

With the upcoming prequel series, Legendary and Heisserer aim to explore the earlier days of the Pacific Rim saga. This new venture has the potential to deepen the franchise’s lore, offering fans a fresh perspective on how the colossal battles between Jaegers and kaiju began. While details are still under wraps, this collaboration is poised to add new layers to an already towering world.

As we eagerly await more updates on the series, you can revisit our original Pacific Rim review, where we scored it a solid 7.5/10. While we noted that it may be Guillermo del Toro’s biggest film, we also mentioned that it might not be his best. However, there’s no denying the massive impact it has had on the genre and its dedicated fanbase.
