The 2024 Pokémon World Championships saw trainers from around the world compete in intense battles, leading to the crowning of new champions in the Trading Card Game (TCG) and various video games. Alongside the competition, the Pokémon Company made several key announcements that have fans buzzing.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket Launches This October

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket is set to launch on iOS and Android on October 30, 2024. This free-to-play mobile version of the classic card game offers a simplified experience with quick battles and immersive 3D digital card art. Players can open two free booster packs daily, making it accessible for new and returning players alike. Registration is already open, with a soft launch currently available in New Zealand.

Pokémon GO Teases a Major Update

Pokémon GO is gearing up for a big update, though details remain under wraps. The Pokémon Company has hinted at a “significant” addition to the game, with more information to come. In the meantime, players can look forward to the debut of Morpeko and a new battle-only form feature, which will allow trainers to change a Pokémon’s form during battles using a charged attack.

Classic Pokémon Card Mechanic Returns in 2025

In 2025, an old school Pokémon card mechanic will make a return to the TCG. Fans can expect to see Trainer’s Pokémon cards like Lillie’s Clefairy ex, Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex, and N’s Zoroark ex in upcoming packs. This mechanic, familiar to those who played early sets like Team Rocket and Gym Heroes, is sure to bring a sense of nostalgia to longtime players.

Pokémon World Championships 2025: Coming to California

The Pokémon World Championships are heading to California over the next two years. The 2025 event will be held in Anaheim from August 15 to August 17, while the 2026 championships will take place in San Francisco from August 28 to August 30. Both cities have previously hosted the event, making them familiar grounds for returning competitors.

New Additions and Battle Mode for Pokémon Unite

Pokémon Unite is adding three new characters—Psyduck, Armarouge, and Darkrai—to its roster soon. Additionally, a new 500-Point Battle mode will be introduced in spring 2025. In this mode, players will earn Aeos energy by defeating wild Pokémon and opponents, with the first team to reach 500 points declared the winner.

The Pokémon World Championships may be over, but there’s plenty to look forward to. We’ll be discussing these updates further on the next episode of the Geek Freaks podcast. Listen to the Geek Freaks Podcast.
