Netflix has officially greenlit the highly anticipated animated Ghostbusters series, with Elliott Kalan taking the helm as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, according to Variety. This exciting news comes over two years after the initial announcement, sparking fresh excitement among Ghostbusters fans.
Kalan’s involvement in the project is a promising sign. He’s no stranger to delivering hit content, having previously served as the head writer for Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000 and as a longtime writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Kalan also has a strong foothold in the comic book world, having written Marvel’s fan-favorite six-issue limited series Spider-Man and the X-Men.
The Creative Team Behind the Series
The new Ghostbusters series will be a collaborative effort between Netflix and Sony’s Columbia Pictures Ghost Corps. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the dynamic duo behind the recent Ghostbusters films, are also on board as producers. Their involvement ensures that the series will stay true to the beloved Ghostbusters legacy while introducing fresh elements to captivate new audiences.

What We Know So Far
The green light for this series isn’t entirely surprising, especially since Sony Pictures Animation hinted at it earlier this year. Just before the annual Ghostbusters Day celebration, which marked the 40th anniversary of the original film, Sony teased fans with a post on Twitter, stating, “There’s something strange in the neighborhood… Our supernatural comedy series, based on Ghostbusters, is coming soon to Netflix.”
In a March update, while promoting Frozen Empire, Kenan reassured fans that the series was in full development. He shared insights on the progress, saying, “I just watched an entire art presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.”
