San Diego Comic-Con 2024 has delivered a treasure trove of exciting updates for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. From a retro take on the Fantastic Four to a shocking new role for Robert Downey Jr., here’s everything you need to know.
A Retro-Futuristic Take on Fantastic Four
Marvel Studios revealed the new title for the upcoming Fantastic Four film: Fantastic Four: First Steps. Set in the 1960s, the film promises a unique retro-futuristic vibe. Director Matt Shakman described it as “part what you know from the 60s, but part what you’ve never seen before.”
Fans were treated to a glimpse of the film’s footage, showcasing Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic in a science-themed show, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing on a dating show. The clip ends with the team prepping for a space launch, bringing an exciting retro PR twist to their journey.

Thunderbolts*, set to conclude Phase 5 of the MCU, gave fans a first look at the antihero team in action. The clip showcased intense stunts and playful banter, with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova taking center stage alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, and David Harbour’s Red Guardian.
Marvel has been tight-lipped about this project, but recent teasers suggest that the asterisk in the title might hint at the team’s transformation into the Dark Avengers. Thunderbolts* is slated for a May 2, 2025 release.
Robert Downey Jr. Returns as Doctor Doom
In a twist that left fans buzzing, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Announced during the Marvel Studios panel, Downey Jr.’s new role has sparked speculation about the character’s origins and connections to the multiverse. Directed by the Russo Brothers, this film is set for a May 7, 2027 release, following Avengers: Secret Wars on May 1, 2026.
Captain America: Brave New World Reveals New Details
Marvel kicked off its SDCC panel with fresh footage from Captain America: Brave New World. The clip featured Harrison Ford’s President Thunderbolt Ross showcasing adamantium recovered from Tiamut’s body, alongside an explosive attack on the White House.
Giancarlo Esposito has been confirmed as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, leading the Serpent Society. The film promises intense action and significant developments, including Ross transforming into Red Hulk during a press conference.
Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
