On Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, Disney Branded Television and BBC thrilled fans with the announcement of “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” an upcoming Doctor Who spinoff series. This five-part series promises to dive deep into the mythology of the Doctor Who universe, bringing back the enigmatic Sea Devils. The cast includes notable names such as Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki), with familiar Doctor Who faces Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim joining the fray.

What to Expect from “The War Between the Land and the Sea”

The series, created by Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies and written in collaboration with Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches, The Pact, Doctor Who), is set to explore a gripping narrative involving an ancient threat. The official synopsis reads, “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.” The Sea Devils, a classic species within the Doctor Who lore, are at the heart of this new conflict.

A Look at the Sea Devils

The Sea Devils are a prehistoric species that once dominated Earth before humans came into power. These aquatic antagonists first appeared in the 1972 Doctor Who serial “The Sea Devils,” challenging John Pertwee’s Third Doctor. They resurfaced in the 1984 serial “Warriors of the Deep,” where they encountered Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor. Their most recent appearance was in the 2022 special “Legend of the Sea Devils,” featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.
