The addition of Tesla’s polygonal Cybertruck to Fortnite has stirred up a storm of negative reactions among fans. Joining the battle royale game on July 23, the Cybertruck has not been received warmly by the gaming community.

A Divisive Addition

Epic Games introduced the Cybertruck as a free reward for players who complete a series of challenges via the Summer Road Trip quest before August 6. While this cross-game unlock offers players the chance to add the futuristic vehicle to their garage in both Fortnite and Rocket League, the reception has been anything but smooth.

A Wave of Criticism

The Cybertruck’s angular design and the hype surrounding its addition have led to a flurry of negative comments and memes. Many players are mocking the vehicle, with some even planning to destroy any Cybertruck they encounter in-game.

Developers Weigh In

The backlash isn’t limited to the player base. Some Epic Games developers have openly expressed their disdain for the Cybertruck’s inclusion. Fortnite associate producer Robby Williams didn’t mince words on Twitter, stating, “Destroy on sight [middle finger emoji].” Similarly, Epic Games producer Kyle Wynn emphasized that, despite the diverse opinions within the company, he too advocated for targeting the Cybertruck in-game.

The Community’s Verdict

The overwhelming response from both players and developers highlights a significant disconnect between Epic Games’ promotional efforts and the community’s expectations. The Cybertruck’s addition, meant to be an exciting crossover event, has instead become a focal point for criticism and satire.

The Fallout

This backlash serves as a reminder of the delicate balance developers must maintain when integrating real-world brands into beloved virtual spaces. While collaborations can offer unique content, they must resonate with the community to be successful.
