Brendan Gleeson is the latest actor to be ensnared by Nicolas Cage’s creative web. The Golden Globe and Oscar-winning star of The Banshees of Inisherin has been cast as the villain in Sony’s upcoming live-action Spider-Man Noir series, set to premiere on Amazon and MGM+. Variety reports that Gleeson will join a still-growing cast that includes Nicolas Cage, reprising a version of the black-clad private investigator he voiced in 2018’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Lamorne Morris from New Girl, who will play Robbie Robertson.

While specifics about Gleeson’s character remain under wraps, Marvel’s original Spider-Man Noir comic series re-imagined many of Spider-Man’s classic villains as 1930s gangster types. Among these were Norman “The Goblin” Osborn, a carnival freak turned crime lord, and his sinister associates: Kraven, a former animal trainer; the Vulture, an animalistic freak show cannibal; and the Chameleon, a master of disguise.

The official synopsis reveals that Spider-Man Noir will follow an aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who grapples with his past life as the city’s only superhero. This character is not Peter Parker, who was reimagined in the 2008 Spider-Man Noir series as an investigative reporter and crusading crime-fighter taking on the mob during the Great Depression.

The series promises to be a visual and narrative treat, with Emmy Award-winning director Harry Bradbeer (known for Fleabag and Killing Eve) directing and executive producing the first two episodes of the eight-episode series. Co-showrunners and executive producers Oren Uziel (The Lost City, 22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel’s The Punisher, Shantaram) developed the series alongside Spider-Verse visionaries Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, as well as Sony’s Spider-Man movie producer Amy Pascal, all of whom also serve as executive producers.

With a stellar lineup both in front of and behind the camera, the Spider-Man Noir series is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the Spider-Man universe, offering a fresh, noir-inspired take on the beloved superhero lore. Stay tuned for more updates on this intriguing project as the cast continues to grow and more details emerge.
