HBO has officially given the go-ahead for Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios’ highly anticipated Green Lantern show, Lanterns. This straight-to-series order promises to deliver eight episodes focused on DC’s iconic will-powered heroes, with an exceptional creative team at the helm.

A Star-Studded Creative Team

Lanterns boasts some of HBO’s finest talent, including Chris Mundy, known for his work on True Detective: Night Country and Ozark, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Joining him are Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers, Lost) and comic book legend Tom King. Both Lindelof and King will co-write the series alongside Mundy and serve as executive producers, ensuring a top-tier production that stays true to the spirit of the Green Lantern lore.

An Intriguing Plotline

HBO has released an official logline for Lanterns: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” This gripping narrative sets the stage for a unique blend of cosmic adventure and gritty detective work, sure to captivate fans of all ages.

A Key Part of the New DC Universe

Lanterns is set to introduce beloved DC heroes John Stewart and Hal Jordan into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe (DCU). The series will be a foundational piece of the DCU, aligning with Gunn’s vision of a unified universe. In a joint statement, Gunn and Safran expressed their excitement: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Setting the Stage for Future DCU Projects

Lanterns is just the beginning of the DCU’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters. Gunn previously teased the Green Lantern show as a “True Detective-type mystery” involving an ancient horror on Earth. This show is expected to be a significant stepping stone towards more interconnected stories within the DCU.

Looking Forward to the DCU’s Future

While Lanterns doesn’t have a release date yet, the DCU will officially kick off with the release of Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025. This film will introduce David Corenswet’s Superman alongside other major DC characters like Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Additionally, fans will see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a live-action Green Lantern, in the upcoming superhero movie.
