Bruce Timm returns to the Batman franchise with “Batman: Caped Crusader,” an animated series distinct from its predecessor, “Batman: The Animated Series.” While it shares a similar aesthetic, “Caped Crusader” is a unique creation, driven by Timm’s vision of a Batman inspired by old pulp heroes like Doc Savage and The Shadow. Unlike his previous depictions, this Batman is remote, allowing more focus on the supporting cast, making it feel like an ensemble piece. Set in the 1940s with a Noir and pulp flavor, this series offers a fresh take on Gotham City, showcasing secondary characters like Alfred and the Gordons in more prominent roles. “Caped Crusader,” featuring Hamish Linklater as Batman, promises a new and visually distinct portrayal of the Dark Knight’s world, debuting in August.
