The legendary Star Wars parody, “Spaceballs,” has a sequel that is officially in the works! Amazon MGM Studios has joined forces with Josh Gad and the original creator, Mel Brooks, to bring “Spaceballs 2” to life.

The initial report by TheInSneider, which has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets, revealed that Josh Gad, renowned for his roles as Olaf in “Frozen” and LeFou in the live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” will not only star in the sequel but also serve as a producer alongside Brooks. The script is being crafted by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Josh Greenbaum, known for “Strays” and “Becoming Bond,” will direct the film. Kevin Salter is also on board as an executive producer.

While specific story details remain under wraps, the excitement surrounding the project is palpable. Samit and Hernandez have a history of working on successful projects like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.” Their collaboration with Gad has been in the works for several weeks, and fans have been eagerly anticipating news related to “Spaceballs 2.”

On June 7, Gad hinted at the project in an Instagram post: “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited,” Gad wrote. “Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”

Mel Brooks, at 97, continues to be a pioneering force in comedy. His impressive filmography includes classics like “Young Frankenstein,” “History of the World,” “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” and of course, “Spaceballs,” which has maintained a cult following since its 1987 release. The original film featured a stellar cast including John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Joan Rivers, and Brooks himself.

As anticipation builds for “Spaceballs 2,” fans will be eagerly awaiting further announcements and a release date for what promises to be a hilarious and nostalgic return to the Spaceballs universe.

One response to “Spaceballs Sequel in the Works: Amazon MGM Studios, Josh Gad, and Mel Brooks Team Up”

  1. I always appreciate it most when the timing is right for a sequel. Particularly with Blade Runner 2049, Top Gun Maverick and the upcoming Beetlejuice 2. A Spaceballs sequel will hopefully help to refresh the sci-fi comedy universe. Thank you for this article.
